Incident overview
A fatal industrial accident occurred at South Eastern Coalfields Limited’s (SECL) Kusmunda open‑cast mine in Korba district on Friday, 16 January 2026.
During routine mining operations, the hydraulic cylinder of a machine suddenly burst, causing a violent explosion that triggered panic and an immediate disruption of activities at the site.
Location and facility details
The incident took place inside the Kusmunda open‑cast coal mine operated by SECL in Korba district, Chhattisgarh, India.
At the time of the event, six workers engaged by contracting firm Neelkanth were deployed on the hydraulic machine involved in the explosion.
Incident sequence and response
While routine work was underway, the hydraulic machine’s cylinder failed catastrophically and burst, creating chaos among personnel working in the immediate vicinity.
Mining operations were temporarily halted as emergency measures were activated and the injured were evacuated from the pit and transported to medical facilities for urgent treatment.
Casualties and evacuation
Sanjay Kumar, 23, a contract worker from Wadrafnagar, sustained severe injuries and died on the spot, leaving behind a bereaved family in which he was the only brother among four sisters.
Two co‑workers suffered serious injuries and were immediately shifted to a private hospital, where their condition has been reported as critical, while other workers at the scene were safely evacuated.
Additional context
Family members of the deceased and fellow workers have accused Neelkanth, the contracting firm, of negligence and of failing to comply with prescribed safety norms, particularly regarding equipment inspection and maintenance.
Labour representatives stated that the tragedy could likely have been prevented had standard safety protocols and inspection regimes been rigorously implemented, and they have demanded an impartial investigation and adequate compensation for the victim’s family.
Safety implications
The incident highlights critical vulnerabilities in hydraulic system integrity management, contractor oversight, and preventive maintenance within large‑scale open‑cast coal mining operations.
Reported allegations of inadequate adherence to safety norms underscore the need for strengthened enforcement of machine inspection schedules, competency assurance for contractors, and robust incident investigation to prevent recurrence.
